NFCC students, graduates benefit from partnership with Doctors’ Memorial Hospital
Medical Coder/Biller program helps students gain valuable experience that can lead to future employment
MADISON, FL – Doctors’ Memorial Hospital in Perry has been a valued partner of the North Florida Community College Medical/Coder Biller program since 2015, offering student internships and helping open doors to employment for NFCC graduates. During NFCC’s Spring Term 2018, DMH’s Medical Records Department had an NFCC intern, Ashlyn Wiles, and an NFCC graduate, Rebecca Brown, working together in the department.
“I learned so much in just two short semesters,” said NFCC student Ashlyn Wiles. “I got to work first-hand with programs I read about in the textbook. It’s amazing everything I learned and the people I met along the way.”
According to NFCC instructor Takiyah Mitchell, on-the-job training opportunities are essential to exposing students to important skills and knowledge. “Internships assist in real-world situations and scenarios. It helps students adjust to the healthcare environment which can change from day-to-day and patient-to-patient.”
NFCC partners with facilities and organizations throughout the North Florida and South Georgia region to help students develop skills, build confidence and develop professional networks. Ebony Curry, Director of Health Information Management at Doctors’ Memorial Hospital, says it’s a win-win situation for all involved. “Students have the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience that can lead to future employment,” said Curry. “This also helps to strengthen and sharpen job skills within the community.”
NFCC is enrolling now for its Fall Term 2018 Medical/Coder Biller program. Classes begin Sept. 4. The program prepares students for the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam and prepares graduates for jobs coding patients’ medical information for billing purposes in a variety of settings such as hospitals, physicians’ offices, medical clinics, nursing homes or insurance companies.
